What is a mod chip?

A mod chip is a device that is added to the internal hardware of a video games console in order to increase its functionality. This means that the changes to the hardware allow you to use the console for things it wasn't originally designed for.
More than a dozen chips exist for the Xbox, but in general they all offer similar features.

One of the popular uses of mod chips is to play games destined for other countries or markets. Xbox games are region encoded to only work in the predefined region. For example, games developed for the Japanese market will not work in an American Xbox without modification. Similarly, games that are being adapted for the European market that uses the PAL video norm are often released months later than their American (NTSC) counterparts. With an Xbox equipped with a mod chip, imported games can be played regardless of region encoding or PAL/NTSC video system.

Depending on the particular chip, it may allow you to:
  • Play games produced in any region of the world (See region codes)
  • Use your Xbox to play movies and music
  • Play DVD movies produced in any region of the world (See region codes)
  • Play copied/backed up games
  • Play copied/backed up DVD movies
  • Use your Xbox as a PC

All existing Xbox mod chips require opening the Xbox in order to install the chip. This means the console will no longer be under warranty.
