Xbox Shopping Guide 2009: What else do I need to buy?

If you've bought an Xbox, the chances are you'll want to buy a few extras (games/accessories) to enhance the experience. Occasionally, Xbox bundles will be released which will contain an Xbox console, a controller and a mix of games and/or accessories. Such bundles will almost certainly be cheaper than purchasing each item separately.

Xbox games

The most obvious and essential extra is a game (or games). After all, what fun can an Xbox be without a game? There are literally hundreds of Xbox games to choose from, which can be daunting if you're not searching for any one in particular. An extra Xbox controller

Single player gaming can be fun but it doesn't compare to the potential enjoyment offered by playing together, with a friend or many friends! (Four controllers can be connected to the Xbox at any one time.) There are many types of Xbox controllers available, the Xbox Controller S being considered by most to be the best.

Xbox controller extension cord

Xbox controller extension cables have proved to be immensely popular due to the unfortunate fact that the cords supplied with the Xbox controllers are too short for most people! The controller extension cables allow you to sit back from the TV and adopt a more comfortable position. They also reduce the risk of nasty accidents involving people tripping over any cord between the controllers and console.

Xbox DVD remote

If you want to play DVD movies on the Xbox, and you do not intend to install a mod chip¹, you will need the Xbox DVD Movie Playback Kit. This kit includes an infra red receiver which simply plugs into one of the four controller ports at the front of the Xbox, and the remote itself. This remote control is also supported by most of the music/movie playing software available for Xbox consoles that have had mod chips installed.

Portable Xbox monitor

For gaming whilst travelling, or avoiding arguments surrounding who gets to use the TV, a Portable Xbox LCD monitor is the answer. These come with built in speakers, car adapters and power converters to make them truly portable!
