Update June 2005: There's a newer chip available now: Xenium spICE xbox mod chip

OpenXbox PC BioXX Xbox Mod Chip

The PC BioXX Xmod chip (also known as OpenXbox project) was originally developed by a German group of independent developers.

The development of special tools and BIOS versions designed for OpenXbox (PC-BioXX) is in progress. On the horizon are media players (DIVX), VCD players, emulators for other gaming systems, complete operating systems like Linux and many other tools, that turn the Xbox into a machine capable of many more things than Microsoft originally intended. A functional Xbox Linux kernel has been announced.

PC BioXX modchip A future proof Xbox mod chip?

The makers of the OpenXbox/PC BioXX mod chip claim that due to the way how all other Xbox Mod Chips work, the OpenXbox (PC-BioXX) is the only Xbox mod chip solution that ensures future compatibility.

In attempts to fight piracy of Xbox games, Microsoft may or may not begin to implement mod chip detection algorithms in future Xbox games releases, which would block any or all operations if a mod chip is detected. This could mean that earlier types of Xbox mod chips would be rendered useless, because they cannot be updated.

The OpenXbox - PC-BioXX is advertised as a hardware tool with the capability of updating the Xbox BIOS manually at any time. BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output system, the core of the Xbox operation system that deals with low-level hardware access. time. Since the PC BioXX mod chip leaves the original BIOS unmodified, it is possible to start the Xbox in its original condition at any time, just by pressing a button. The modification comes with a built-in parallel port that allows to upgrade the BIOS using a Windows PC.

Installation

The earlier mod chips have deterred many XBox owners because of the large amount of delicated soldering that was required for installation. The OpenXbox/PC-BioXX Xbox mod chip requires has only 9 solder points, the same number as the X-ecutor mod chip. Unlike the Playstation 2, that has seen new mod chip releases for every new batch of Playstation 2 consoles, this particular Xbox mod-chip solution claims to work on all Xbox models world-wide, and plays import and backup games (US, Japanese, European, PAL, NTSC...) -- in short, ALL and any games that are available. Another feature is that the modification can be switched off or removed at any time without damaging the Xbox mainboard.
